Detroit River Walleye Fishing

Detroit river walleye fishing

Detroit river walleye fishing in the spring is one experience that you should try once, then again, then again. I had been working in Ohio recently and had been trying to get with my good friend Tom Arlington for about a month, either at my place steelheading or the PM. Tom put a bug in my ear to head on over on the way home to Michigan to try some Detroit river walleye fishing. As the time came close it was sort of a circus, work demands, and high winds put the trip in jeopardy.

Spring Detroit river walleye fishing under most conditions is pretty good but if a good wind kicks up it can muddy the water pretty quick. Well when we decided to finally go, the flags in OH were straight out and whipping and Tom said it was the same at his house. The weather looked horrible for the upcoming weeked so we decided, do or die. When I met Tom at St. Jean's I couldn't believe it. The wind was gone, literally gone. It was a beautiful day for vertical jigging.

vertical jigging for walleyes

Detroit river walleye fishing is done several ways, we were vertical jigging with minnows and jigs. Vertical jig fishing in my mind is the best way, to hook into this awesome fish.I myself am not at the point where I turn these fish loose, because those fillets are so good and my family love to eat walleye. In my mind you can't beat walleye.  If you have never done spring fishing for walleye on the Detroit River consider going with North Bay Charters. Tom Arlington loves the outdoors and his knowledge of the river is amazing. He grew up here and fathere and grandfather all spent many years on the river showing Tom the ropes. He of course has taken it to the next level and has become an excellent charter boat captain. He quickly had me into fish and showed the importance of jig action to simulate a minnow trying to get away. Tom put me on fish but it was my job to get them to the boat, and I just seemed to be a little slow today. I missed alot of fish. I would watch Tom and watch his motion on how he jigged fished and he beat me pretty hard.  Tom is excellent on putting you on fish and know which spots to hit and when.

Vertical jigging can be fast and furious when using minnows and jigs, and even though we only had a couple of hours to fish due to the fact that I wanted to get home and see the family. We were on fish for every drift we made. Tom has an excellent boat for jigging walleyes. Bow mounted electric trolling motor with an very wide wide boat with high sides. The open floor leaves lots of room for moving about. The simplicity of the boat makes it idea for vertical jigging for Detroit river walleye fishing.

Detroit River walleye fishing with North Bay Charters was a great time.Jigging walleyes made it even better. We even met some good friends Ted and Tom while fishing. They related a story that made my day. They had found a body that was missing for a couple of months and they stayed with it till the Ontario Provencial Police showed up. They are regulars on greatmich.com and we chatted for quite a bit about jigging walleye.
