Ok I have been trying to fish the Saginaw bay trolling and have been far from successful. I got 1 walleye and I think he felt sorry for me. I did pick up a couple of off shore planer boards as suggested by a member of the website. I have a fairly large variety of crawler harnesses but I guess I'm unsure of how to get it to work. I know how the boards work that’s easy with directions. I know how to hook a crawler to the harness. But how far back should the harness be from the board and do you use a weight with it? If I'm marking fish at 13' deep how do I get my bait in that range? I can only get my boat to troll at the lowest speed of 1.9 mph. I am open to your input guys.

If it were me right now you want to be fishing Calahan Reef. It is east of the man made island about 4 miles. You will see all the boats. Have several uncles fishing the area and are doing great, limits everytime. They are trolling harnesses from 1.5 to 1.8mph. You should be in 8 foot of water if you fine the reef. Off of your board put the line back 8 to 9 foot. This will keep the harness out of the weeds for the most part but you may hit a few. I have been told the slower you go the more trash fish you are going to catch. I will be out there Sunday for sure. We fished it 2 sundays ago and got our 10 in about 1.5 hours. A very good friend of mine has been fishing north east of the spark plug regularly in about 18 foot of water trolling form 1.4 to 1.6 running the harnesses off the boards at 16 to 19 foot. He said the bigger fish are suspended at about 15 foot in that deeper water. Color when I have fished seem to make no difference however the last time out a lot of our fish came on a tiger blade a mix of green red yellow black. you may want to get a drift sock

Yea I didn't have a drift sock so I got creative and tied a life vest to the anchor and dragged it. Slowed me down to about 1.6 mph so you only go 8' behind the planer board? How far down dose that get me? Also are there any weights involved? I have heard of people using bottom bouncers. Is that in conjunction with planer boards?

well you attach your harness to the bottom bouncer then you let 8 feet out of line attach your board and let it out. I'd guess it gets you 5 to 6 feet down. The fish are laying in the cover and coming up to take the bait. At least that is how i figure it. I am no cuntboy but have fished the bay a lot over the past 10 years have a pretty good idea of how to get them most of the time

The reef you are talking about is that just north of the Saginaw River? Other than that it makes sense to me.

callahan reef is east of that island about 3 miles. you can put in at jones road off of m-25 and then head out of there you will see the boats there will be 50 to a hundred at all times. better yet go to Gander by the saginaw bay spot map. it has gps #'s and show you all these spots.

I'll be in a 14' aluminum v-hull with a 7.5 hose honda. I will more than likely have 1 of my dogs with me either a solid white pit bull or an engilsh bulldog. I hope to be the guy catching fish instead of just boating and tying knots.

Anderson do you live near the Midland area I have a 30" drift bag and don't use it. "Put a trolling plate on my boat." It's yours if you want it and would be more than happy to so you some set ups that work very well. I will be fishing out of gambil's tomorrow around 7am. The black hole has been very good to me with limits most outtings. I don't like to post my cell or email, so just post and we can make a meet if you want.

I would love to take you up on that offer but I know I wont be getting up there by 7am heck it's 130 am and i'm just geeting off to bed. I was going to try to get out neer the reef but have made no solid plans as of yet. I went out of gambills Wensday to the black hole and did poorly. meening I caught nothin but I'm sure that was due to my setup. If by chance you see a single cab red dodge dakota with stepside and a lite bar on it and a CC sticker in the window thats me and the tailgate will be unlocked. thanks again for the offer.

If you want the drift sock hate to see it go to waste. I'll be fishing friday and maybe sunday, or if you'll be passing through midland i live near the circle, jefferson @ sugnet. see ya and good fishing.

Sure I'd take that drift sock off your hands. I plan to try to fish this Friday although I'm not sure if I'm going to try callahan reef as prudenski25 suggested or if i'm going to go back to the black hole. now that I have an idea of how to set up my boards. Where do you thing you might fish this weekend.

GETWET4484, I think I need to get that drift sock from you. If I need to be trolling at 1-1.4mph then it may be the only thing stopping me from catching fish. I have been trolling for the last 2 weeks and can only get down to 1.9mph. I picked up 1 fish and it's getting frusterating. at any rate my e-mail is andersons101@msn.com I might be willing to stop by and pick it up from you if you don't mind. Hoping to get out tomorrow.

anderson I sent you an e-mail with my address and cell number, let me know if you got it we'll make a meet. 30" bag should slow your boat to a crawl.

Ok so GETWET4484 and I went out to the black hole a place I tried twice two weeks ago and got 1 walleye. I learned alot of good info from a fellow sportsman. we got our limit and picked up a nice cat fish and a couple white bass also even got a nice pike to the boat but wasn't able to land it. all and all it was a beautiful day to fish off a 4th of July hangover.

I hope it wasn't a fluke also and doubt that it was. it seems like the most important thing is speed. I just couldn't get my boat slow enough. THat shouldn't be a problem now. after that you just throw the bait of your choice at the fish.

I live in Bullock creek and recently bought a boat wanting to get back into walleye fishing. I am working on getting it rigged up and if you would be willing, I would like to see how you have your boat set up. I am an avid salmon fisherman but just a "rusty" walleye wannabe fisherman.

Let me know or email me directly at frank.brown@casesystems.com

I'll say this also I purchased some off shore planer boards and put the tattle flags on them. They work good but after going out and seeing how easy Churchs planer borads are to use my next 2 will be Churchs.
