The last day we had the boat out in the St Ignace area we left the salmon rods at home and rigged noodle rods to the downriggers with 8 pound line and open bail reels. I was surprised at how much faster it was to set the downriggers. We did get one hit and one fish an 8 pound steelhead. Most of the fight was 100 or more yards behind the boat and it was a battle. Now I am considering buying some more steelhead rods to replace the downrigger rods. Does anyone else fish like this? What are the disadvantages and advantages before I buy more equipment?
Thanks for your input. I think that I will be fishing lighter next year. The only downfall that I can see is that you really want to stay out of boat traffic as much as you can. There are guys out there that no matter what you do they want to trade boat paint with you. When your boat is marked as mine is other fishermen or wannabe fishermen want to hug your boat. I am afraid if I go too light I will be losing line and lures to prop blades. I guess I will have to try it and see how many times that I get cut off.
I have for years had 2 10ft steel head rods that I run as stacked lines off my downriggers. We came to refer to them as bonus rods because of the blast you had fighting a decent size chinook on them. I have them spooled with 10lb test and Penn 109 trolling reels.
