I will be on the back bays of L Huron this weekend looking for enough ice to set a couple of tip ups for steelhead. Fortunately you don't have to go out too far or too deep to catch them. On first ice you can get a couple of nice steelies in just two feet of water. I will give it a try and hope that I have a pic to post
Checked N Huron over the weekend with 60 mph winds and rain all of the ice that was there is now piled up on shore. We are waiting until 1-1-2010. I will have all of the gear with me then and I will be heading out.
Yes, the ice is finally safe on a private pond that I fish on near Douglas. I've got my new Clam shanty set up out there and a mr buddy heater going in there makes it so comfortable that you can strip down to your bare essentials and still not get cold. if anyone is looking to man an extra rod or two, I'm going to be fishing there this weekend. there is some girthy pike in this pond as well as some nice perchies.
I have fished Houghton lake twice in the last 3 weeks. this last weekend there was a solid 8 plus inchs of ice. I have only caught a couple of walleye and my budy got some pike and a walleye. he did loose a nice walleye at the whole but like a good friend I won't give him credit for that. LOL
was just out on a small inland lake (approx.180 acres) in oakland county. ice was good all over the lake. a good consistant 6-7 inches. 4 wheelers all over the lake. will post fishing report later. Remember all lakes freeze differently so use extreme caution on unfamilar waters.
I took a nice steelhead on 1/16 in three feet of water on one of the bays up north. I have a picture posted in the galleries 14 pounds and 34" nice hook jaw male. The ice is only about 6" so I am not going out to far yet. Unless it gets colder soon it might just be a short season. Better safe than sorry. If you are in the lower penninsula I would be very careful as they have had a couple of people become victims of bad ice last week.
any reports of smelt on higgins lake yet.
yes, hearing from some friends of mine the smelt are biting on Higgins now.
I see Houghton lake has 5 to 7" of ice has anyone benn out on any of the inland lakes? I am coming up at the end of January.
