I publish a weekly fishing report that covers the entire E.U.P.
It is used in the St. Ignace News, AAA of Michigan, fishweb.com, iceshanty.com, and greatwaters.com and of course greatmich.com.
If you would like a copy for your newspaper or website or for any other reason I will be glad to email you one each week.
I have extensive contacts for all the E.U.P. not only bait shop owners and charter boat captains but many many fellow fishermen. My reports are very complete and accurate.
Just drop me an email at dayooper57@hotmail.com or call me at 906-298-1715.
I think this site is one of the best sites going for info. on all of MI and I do fish everywhere in the state but I have over four decades of fishing the E.U.P. So I leave reporting for the lower peninsula to those who have more knowledge than I do and they do an excellent job. I want to thank everyone that reports here. keep up the good work!
I will be on Higgins Lake this afternoon fishing for smelt got a great report of 120 smelt per fisherman last night so I'm fired up. Will report here on my success w/pictures.
Caught some decent Perch on Muskie bay at cedarville. Perch fishing is just starting to heat up and I will be fishing Duck Bay this week watch for more pics of bigger perch.
Is the ice still tight to shore?
Yes ice is still tight to shore but you can't access the lake at the end of the ramp in Hessel or at the end of four mile block road in Cedarville. In Hessel go down the road along the lake past the post office and when the road turns a hard left (north) access the lake right there in Hessel. At muskie bay the ice is bad at the bottom of the hill but you can still get around it on either side just be careful.
Get ready yooper, The perch & gills will be bitin first ice on Brevort. I will find some ice on a bay in Huron and set up for steelhead shortly after deer season is over. My gear is ready to go.
How do you fish for steelies through the ice? I have heard about it before, but have not researched it that much. Sounds like a lot of fun!
Any stream that has steelhead runs in the spring will have steelhead just offshore all winter long. You want to fish in 8 feet or less water (do not include ice depth). Wigglers on a very small hook work best with a bb size split shot about 16 inches up and just enough of a bobber to float your rig. We also use tip ups with 6 lb line and a spawn bag right on the bottom. I fish off of several stream mouths in the EUP when I get into the steelhead I keep going back. Like any other fish once you find them they will stay there. There is nothing like a 10 pound steelie on a little ice fishing pole or handlining one through a hole on a tip up. You want to use a hand auger ,lighter to carry and it does not spook the fish. Use the gas auger you may as well stay home. You also want to be on the ice at your spot with holes drilled and lines set a half hour before daylight. Sometimes the fish will make a feeding run right at daylight. We open the bail on the reels set them on a bucket and stay away from thee hole. Do not pour a cup of coffee at daylight if you are in a good spot it will freeze in your cup before you get a drink. I seldom go more than 100 yards offshore so you get an extended spring season too
That sounds like a blast! I'm going to school up here at Lake State, so that would be something I definitely want try. What are some of the stream mouths that you fish off of? If you don't want to tell me on this could you just send me an email at jgostiaux@lssu.edu, or if you just don't want to spoil something great I will just search around on my own no bid deal. Thanks
We should have good ice in the UP in week. I hope to see you out there yooper57. You got a couple of nice deer now you need to catch the surf. One of these days I will take you with me and show you how to get those big steelhead through the ice
Ya, I am very much interested to know your work. Fishing is also my passion and I also like to read articles on fishing. I have read some of yours article and those were very enjoyable.
This is the last weekend for Walleyes in da UP. Come on up and I will put you on some great bluegill fishing and I always get a nice walleye in the same spot.
North Bay Cottage overlooking Moran Bay near the DNR boat launch. At the snowmobile trail head for all the Eastern Upper Peninsula, and right now the Ice Bridge to Mackinac Island. Minutes from Brevoort Lake.
