HERE IS A POST I FOUND THAT ALOT OF YOU MIGHT LIKE TO READ ABOUT THE OHIO STEELHEAD RIVERS. 20-30? NO problem on the right river.It is not rare for someone who knows how to fish. Most do not, IMHO.That is why most report 3-5 fish.Not everyone gets big #s. Come fish for yourself before you judge on idle gossip and rumours. I have access to a section of an unstocked river that overwinters some serious #s and 50-75 day is not unusual in that stretch in the spring.Last time I fished it end of Jan I landed close to 40 fresh,super-hot chrome manistees in one day.I fished the wk before that w Junkie and they kicked his a$$! But that is not every river or even all of that river. You have to find them just like everywhere else.It is not like Pa where the fish stack top to bottom ...but they stock 2.5 million fish so there ya have that for 40 mi of shoreline.In Oh we stock 400,000 for over 200 mi of shoreline and a whole lot more streams.At this time of yr every stream that hits Erie has fish in it,even the Maumee and I ,personally,have landed fish out of almost every one and certainly all the ones I have fished. If you are even a halfway decent fisherman you will catch fish on any stream you pick.Just don not expect big #s till ya learn what you are doing and learn the stream you are on. Also,do not bring your Mi habits to Oh as the fish WILL laugh at you. #s 14 and 16 yarn flies and nymphs are the tickets to fish...not the giant yarnwads and stoneflies on #6 hooks used in Mi. I use the small stuff in Mi and do well for hooking #s but the banks don t allow you to chase the fish down like in Oh so there are a whole lot more lost fish using the small stuff that they take better. The vermillion is beat to heck these days but you might like it as it is similar to Mi streams w all the wood in it but theres no sand,just mud and fine black shale gravel.Mill hollow (a park) access is a good start. The rocky is a sewer. I never fish it. Lots of city people there too. The Huron in Oh is not stocked but gets strays and is much like Mi streams w the wood cover. You will have to walk and search just like @ home,no big#,just a few nice fish for a day.Go E and the #s increase significantly.The E side will fish well as of tomorrow till we get more rain.The E side is also almost all shale slate bottom w little to no wood.Lower river if right after a rain,mid to upper if no recent rains is a rule I follow for fishing there.Chagrin up near gates and wilson mills has a lot fish right now due to the dam that stops them.Ditto upper grand at harpersfield.Some flows to look for: Chagrin,400or<,grand,800 or<,rocky200 or <,the V,125 or <,huron125 or<. If you have got all those #s probably any stream in Oh is fishing. You guys want a challenge? Fish the Grand in Oh.Big river fishing and fish are well scattered so you will have to do a lot of searching ...just like Mi.Good river to float but lousy places to put in,no launches. I have heard people dog our fish for lack of fight. Well,depends on when you fish and what river. Mi rivers have a greater velocity due to the sand bottoms,no resistance to waterflow. We have TONS of rock that slow the velocity significantly.Any fish,even dead,will fight in the big man or mo.Fish in the fall here and you get a lot of Pa strays that really don not fight. But,the manistee fish we get from you guys(we trade channel catfish for your eggs,nice deal,eh?) are exactly what you guys are hooking back home and they start showing up in #s in late Nov.They fight no matter where you find them. Some of the more popular rivers will be tougher to hook fish since they have been beat up and hooked so many times.NO different than fishing the AuSable in the spring or other popular Mi streams;been hooked too many times ,shy to bite and the fight is gone. As previously noted,we have no salmon(thank god,greedy,stinkyskanks that they are,grt lks kings smell bad and eat too much) so our steelies have plenty to eat.Also steelies are more adaptable to a changing forage base,unlike salmon. In lk erie they even feed on the spiny water fleas(hence the success of so called mysis patterns).The fleas make up as much as 15% of the diet at times. Someone made a remark about smarter better educated fish in Mi? No,all steelhead are stupid fish. Carp and brn trout are smart fish.I fish all over the grt lks and they aint any smarter in any one state than any other and wild does not make them any smarter either.I have put in plenty time on Superior tribs and I call those fish dumb as PAs if they are fresh. Find fresh fish and you are into stupid fish. Been hooked a time or two? Always much smarter! Go fish the bugwater on the PM,good example of that and how fish are harder to get to bite and don not fight after they have been hooked a time or two...just like Pa. As I see it,the biggest problem in Mi is the health(or lack thereof) of your lakes and competition w salmon for forage. The guys I see taking the most fish are bait guys who fish w skein sacks.But, if they bought their license I guess they are entitled. Most folks do not eat steelhead,esp those dark nasties I see so often strung up,which BTW ,I have seen more than once in gas station and rest stop trash cans up there. Myself? I am content w what a buddy of mine and I refer to as the less is more principle. I am cool w 3-4 fish If I see almost or no-one else. If I am gonna have to compete for space I am gonna want to have some fish to compensate for the lack of the quality experience I prefer. Ohio has some awesome scenery you guys do not have. Ever see 100- 300 foot cliffs on rivers in Mi? All the E streams have some beautiful scenery,esp E of the Grand. Every state has its own unique fishery to offer and I do not judge one against the other(other than Pa where I do not fish,WAY too many people and fish) as they all offer something different.You guys sound like guys arguing over who is gonna win the bowl games next season. What is it matter? Are ya fishing? Is not that what it is all about anyway?Fish are running late cuz it s been cold this year. Come on down and give it a try...you may be pleasntly surprised.Ted

Agree with FU on the wackin the perch. These people think they are conquering nature when they bragg about these limits. Its a finite resource, NOT INFINITE. At least one of those limits maybe two, will find its way to the bottom of the freezer to be dug out 3 years later to end up in the garbage and for what, just to say I can catch my limit everyday. That mentallity is why lake Huron is in the shape its in and soon to be lake Michigan.

Now I would like to update a previous post I submited. I said i felt no sypathy for guy who leave stuff in the back of their trucks. But since that post I talked to a guy who had a bow and a vexilar stolen out of the cab of his truck. I questioned why he would have bow in the truck and he was going to shoot in a leauge after fishing. The people that broke into his truck weren't local theives though. He saw footprints in the snow comming from the river and they went to where a truck was park. Letting me believe he was ripped off by another fisherman leaving the river. I would suggest that any one with anything of value left in their trunk cab keep it out of site somehow or find a place to fish that is within view of your vehicle. I have had shantied ruined by vandals when left overnight before but this is not the first time I heard of other so called fishermen rippoing each other off. There have been augers that came up missing behind their shanties. These thing don't just happen here but seem to be happening more often expecially in the weekend when there are many people here from all over. I cannot accuse anyone but I do know there are less problems during the week. But there are also fewer people around. Just kinda a heads up to guys to be alert and maybe help lookout for your fellow fishermen if you see something suspicious holler or call 911. The fellow I talked to had many more valuables in his truck buit all they took were those two things, and his cab was locked they broke in. tight lines and good fishing.

Msc82,tho I personally dont know Chad Betts,I do know he is not the best guide for Manistee steelhead and if you had any idea what he has been doing on the internet to basically ruin one of his competitors names by a low down despicable act and was disgusting to say the least of what he did,not to mention anyone unfortunate enough to have seen it needed a strong stomach! Orvis was so upset they had to threaten a lawsuit to have him remove from the internet what he did because both He and the person who it appeared directed at and was effecting the most are Both endorsed by Orvis guides! When people do stuff like that and messes with other peoples livelihood you deserve all the bad karma they can get.not to mention it gives the industry a bad name..If you plan on fly fishing the Manistee, 3 better choices would be Hawkins outfitters, Schmidt outfitters and Jons guide service in no particular order!

MY motherin law has a pond stocked with these same gills and i took a friend fishing there this summer and he could not believe the size of these gills.SO SIR DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST.

HEY tom, try taking a measure to those gills. Do you have aby idea how big a 12inch gill is. a 10in is a mounter in most peoples book. I would bet your 12in gills are 8-9inch. Most people who claim 10in gills they really are 8-9 which are still healthy. Sorry to jump on you but that is my fishing pet peave, GUYS WHO CANNOT MEASURE BLUEGILL CORRECT
